Tuesday 27 March

It’s the first morning, since we’ve been in Germany, that we had an alarm call. Christian, the rigger, was due to be at the boat at 9.00. It’s amazing how much just a two hour time change can take your body clock to adapt to. It felt like getting up very early but it wasn’t so. One day at a time, this week, we’ll work towards the alarm going off earlier, so we are in good shape for an early start on Friday, if we are able to leave then.

When we arrived at the boat, Christian was already there, threading the furling loop for the main sail. We spent the morning retrieving some bags from dry storage, followed by a little unpacking. I’m trying to leave as much as possible still in dry bags, as it’s so cold and damp. So far, though, we’re managing to maintain dry inside.

Getting back to full operation
The new mainsail has arrived. That’s very exciting, but we’ll have to wait for Christian to finish the rigging to unpack it.

There’s fish shop on the quayside, with an adjoining cafe. It’s been  packed  every day we have been here, so when we arrived at lunchtime, there wasn’t a table free. We bought fish filled baps to take away. There were delicious. I suspect we’ll be going there again, along with all the other folk enjoying their good food.

After lunch, Tina, the lovely lady, who works in the chandlery and organises all the winter storage bookings, drove us to the supermarket. A quick wiz round Lidl and we have made a big in road into the victualling.

Next we filled up with diesel and water, then pulled the boat well into the harbour, where we are hoping to stay until we make our grand departure. We’ll also be well sheltered from the incoming nasty weather on Wednesday night/ Thursday.

Back at the hotel, early evening, my fingers were stiff with cold. It didn’t take long, though, to thaw out. How relieved I feel to live in an era when we have heating indoors. We are gradually working through recommissioning all the boat systems and it’s all coming along nicely, but the boat is still cold.
