The guys started to leave today. First off was Dave, back to
Scotland, by way of Madrid. He said his
goodbyes yesterday evening and tiptoed out in time to catch an early morning flight.
The rest of us slept in and had a relatively lazy morning, playing with bits of
the boat.
Harry, James and Gerry all took the opportunity to go up the
mast, and were rewarded with photos of the marina from a unique vantage point.
We also got plenty of shots of them to prove that they had done it. Neither Tricia or I felt the need to take the
trip, but I guess we can do it whenever we want or need to.
We headed into town to find a place for lunch and were
rewarded by a fine feast at a harbour-side restaurant. Unfortunately, it was
slightly spoiled by the realisation that the clocks had changed to Spanish time
on our arrival, and we only had a limited amount of time before James and Harry
had to head to the airport. We hurried
the waiting staff along, and managed to enjoy the food before having to
dash. The lads went back to the boat,
while Tricia headed off to pacify the waiting taxi driver. All was well, and it was soon just 3 of us
left.
Tricia, Gerry and I then walked back into town and explored
La Coruna. It is a much larger place than we were expecting, although I guess
the presence of an international airport is a giveaway. I think we were all
anticipating somewhere much more countrified, but this is one of the largest
cities in northern Spain. We spent a happy few hours strolling through the
narrow inner city streets, marveling at the numbers of cafés, bars and
especially banks. There was a cruise ship in the harbour, but the streets
seemed to be filled with locals rather than tourists.
This part of Spain seems very different and distinct from
the southern and eastern coasts that I am more familiar with. The local Galician food looks great and we
will have to sample it over the next few days. This should not be too difficult
as they are setting up a food festival on the quayside in town.
We seem to have walked miles, it is 0.5 km each way to the
marina office and facilities, but this is a good thing after several days of
just being on the boat.
